GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs substance abuse and mental health counseling work with clients in a Methadone treatment setting. Counselor’s duties include but are not limited to screening, assessment, individual/group counseling, and treatment planning. Responsible for servicing primary caseload along with other clients as assigned. The counselor is also responsible for documenting in accordance with company standards. REQUIRES COMPETENCY IN THE FOLLOWING PRACTICE DIMENSIONS:•Clinical Evaluation and Screening•Assessment•Treatment Planning•Referral•Service Coordination - Implementing the Treatment Plan•Service Coordination – Consulting•Service Coordination - Continuing Assessment and Treatment Planning•Counseling – Individual•Counseling – Groups•Counseling Families, Couples, and Significant Others•Client, Family, and Community Education•Documentation•Professional and Ethical ResponsibilitiesKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES: Understanding Addiction1.Understands a variety of models and theories of addiction and other problems related to substance abuse and uses this knowledge to plan intervention strategies with clients. 2.Recognizes the social, political, economic and cultural context within which addiction and substance abuse exist. 3.Identifies the behavioral, psychological, physical health and social effects of psychoactive substances on the client and family members. 4.Recognizes the potential for substance abuse disorders to mimic a variety of medical and psychological disorders and the potential for medical and psychological disorders to co-exist with addiction and substance abuse. 5.Understands the impact of substance abuse on development. Treatment Knowledge1.Is aware of a variety of philosophies, practices, policies, and outcomes of the most generally accepted models of treatment, recovery, relapse prevention, and continuing care for addiction and other substance abuse related problems and develops treatment plans incorporating this knowledge. 2.Includes family, social networks and community systems in the treatment and recovery process. 3.Uses scientifically supported treatment strategies and methods in clinical practice. 4.Participates in interdisciplinary approach to treatment planning and delivery of treatment services. Application to Practice1.Uses established diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders to determine appropriate placement within the continuum of care.2.Effectively uses treatment strategies and methods in working with adolescents. 3.Tailors helping strategies and treatment modalities to the client’s state of dependence, change or recovery. 4.Employs interventions tailored to the client’s and family’s level of cultural and language literacy, cultural identity, learning preferences and disabilities, and spiritual and personal identity. 5.Is familiar with medical and pharmacological resources in the treatment of substance use disorders. 6.Understands contractual and program requirements for the provision of services and meets the standards set for units of service delivered and number of clients served. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:•Bachelor’s degree in counseling or a directly related field with two years of direct client service experience in mental health or substance abuse.•Associates Degree in a directly related field plus four years of direct client service experience in mental health or substance abuse. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS:•Valid Florida driver\'s license•CAP Preferred•Current CPR and First Aid Certification if client contact is part of job•Must pass background and fingerprinting checks•Must follow current required training requirements of Operation PAR, Inc.
